Monaco

Climate: Monaco has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate.

Time Zone: Central European Time (GMT +1)

Expat Population: Proportionally, it has a higher percentage of expats than any other country in the world – out of its current 38,000 inhabitants, only 20% are native Monégasques.

Requirements to obtain VISA: To obtain a work permit the employee must submit their contract of employment stamped by the employment service, along with proof of residence and personal identification to the Service de l’Emploi.

Salaries: A person working in Teaching / Education in Monaco typically earns around 4,480 EUR per month. Salaries range from 2,310 EUR (lowest average) to 7,910 EUR (highest average).

Germany

Climate: Germany’s climate is temperate and marine, with cold, cloudy winters and warm summers.

Time Zone: Central European Time (GMT +1)

Expat Population: As of 2016, there are over 10 million foreign nationals from all around the globe living and working in Germany, making up almost 12% of the population.

Requirements to obtain VISA: To be eligible to work in Germany, you must either have a work/residence permit and a work visa. But not everyone is subject to the visa requirements, however, everyone is subject to the residence/work permit. Residents of the following do not need a visa to work in Germany: EU/EEA, Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Switzerland and the USA.

Salaries: €2,600-€4,400 per month in international schools. In addition, some offer a relocation allowance of €500-€1,000 to help defray the costs of moving, and many offer professional development courses as well.

Fun Fact: 65% of the highways in Germany (Autobahn) have no speed limit.

Uzbekistan

Climate: Uzbekistan’s climate is classified as continental, with hot summers and cool winters.

Time Zone: Uzbekistan Standard Time (GMT +5)

Expat Population: There were approximately 500,000 expats living and working in Uzbekistan as of 2018.

Requirements to obtain VISA: Applicants will need to provide the following documents: A passport that’s valid for at least three months, a copy of the information page of the applicant’s passport, two passport photos in colour, a duly completed visa application form, an employment contract with a company based in Uzbekistan, proof of the applicant’s work history, such as letters of reference from former employers, a medical certificate stating that the applicant has tested negatively for HIV, proof of accommodations in Uzbekistan, such as a signed copy of a lease.

Salaries: A person working in Teaching / Education in Uzbekistan typically earns around 1,400,000 UZS per month. Salaries range from 671,000 UZS (lowest average) to 2,550,000 UZS (highest average).

Fun Fact: Uzbekistan is a doubly-landlocked nation. There are only two such countries in the world, the other one being Liechtenstein in Europe.

Qatar

Climate: Qatar has a dry, subtropical desert climate with low annual rainfall and intensely hot and humid summers.

Time Zone: Arabian Standard Time (GMT +3)

Expat Population: Qatar has about 2.6 million inhabitants as of early 2017, the vast majority of whom (about 92%) live in Doha, the capital. Foreign workers amount to around 88% of the population, with Indians being the largest community numbering around 1,230,000.

Requirements to obtain VISA: First, the prospective employee needs to provide a certificate of good conduct to officials in Qatar. Other requirements include: Blood Test & Disease Screening, Fingerprinting, Overall Health & Wellness Check and Chest X-Ray. In addition, an employee must provide the following documents during the application process: Valid Passport, Copies of Certified Educational Documents and up to 20 Passport Sized Photos (May Be Required).

Salaries: Salaries are generally high in Qatar, ranging from 9,000 to 16,300 Qatari Riyal per month ($2,400 to $4,500) for a degree-qualified teacher at a private international school.

Fun Fact: There are no trees in Qatar. Qatar joins the company of San Marino, Greenland, and Oman, as the only four territories in the world without forests.

China

Climate: Most regions are cold and dry in winter and have a warm and rainy climate in summer.

Time Zone: China Standard Time (GMT +8)

Expat Population: According to China’s most recent National Census of 2010, the first to record the number of foreign residents, there were at least 600,000 expats living in the country. This number is expected to have risen significantly since 2010.

Requirements to obtain VISA: You can go to the Chinese embassy, consulates or other diplomatic missions in person for application. You can also have a friend, a travel agency or visa agency to act on your behalf. There is no need to make an appointment. Mailed applications are not acceptable. If there are Chinese Visa Application Centres (CVASC) in your country, you can go there to submit the application; mailed applications are accepted in some CVASCs.

Salaries: On average, the typical salary for both public and private institutions is between RMB 10,000-RMB 15,000 ($1,400-$2,200) a month. However, some private institutions and international schools offer salaries closer to RMB 20,000 ($2,800) per month and as high as RMB 30,000 ($4,300) per month.

Fun Fact: In 2003, China became only the third country to successfully send a person to space.

Italy

Climate: Hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters.

Time Zone: Central European Time (GMT +1)

Expat Population: As of 1 January 2017, there were over 5 million expats resident in Italy. This amounts to 8.2% of the country’s population.

Requirements to obtain VISA: So, you’re a foreign national who wants to move to Italy and find a job. Unfortunately, if you are a non-EU citizen, you need to already have a job in Italy (and have fulfilled several conditions) before you can apply for an Italy Work Visa.

Salaries: A person working in Teaching / Education in Italy typically earns around 3,870 EUR per month. Salaries range from 1,860 EUR (lowest average) to 7,060 EUR (highest average).

Fun Fact: The small town of Caldari di Ortona has a free wine fountain that flows 24-hours a day with locally grown red wine.

Poland

Climate: Poland’s climate can be described as a temperate climate.

Time Zone: Central European Time (GMT +1)

Expat Population: From 2010 to 2019, the number of expats living in Poland has gone up four-fold, climbing from 84.000 nine years ago to 390.000 in 2019, according to official data.

Requirements to obtain VISA: Because Poland is a member of the European Union (EU), citizens of other EU member states do not need a permit to work there. Most other individuals will need a visa to stay in the country as well as a permit to work. Individuals planning to work in Poland will need a Polish employer to apply for a work permit on their behalf.

Salaries: A person working in Teaching / Education in Poland typically earns around 8,020 PLN per month. Salaries range from 3,850 PLN (lowest average) to 14,600 PLN (highest average, actual maximum salary is higher).

Fun Fact: Marie Curie was actually Polish. Marie Curie, the woman who discovered Polon and Rad, wasn’t French, but Polish. Her name was Marie Sklodowska before she married a Frenchman named Pierre Curie.

Spain

Climate: Visitors can generally expect a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters.

Time Zone: Central European Time (GMT +1)

Expat Population: There are 5,423,198 expats living and working in Spain, a staggering 11.4% of the population. This makes Spain one of the world’s preferred destinations to immigrate to.

Requirements to obtain VISA: You’ll need your passport, medical certificate, no criminal record certificate and a copy of the job contract. When you have the visa, you have three months to come to Spain. The Blue Card is valid for a year and is renewable for as long as you still meet the conditions.

Salaries: A person working in Teaching / Education in Spain typically earns around 2,870 EUR per month. Salaries range from 1,480 EUR (lowest average) to 5,070 EUR (highest average).

Fun Fact: The highest Spanish mountain is not in Spain. Well, it is in Spain, but not in the Iberian Peninsula. A fun fact about Spain is that the highest mountain in the country is Mount Teide (3718 meters). This mountain is situated in the Canary Islands and is an active volcano.

Saudi Arabia

Climate: With the exception of the province of Asir on the western coast, Saudi Arabia has a desert climate.

Time Zone: Arabian Standard Time (GMT +3)

Expat Population: As per the data from 2017-2018, more than 30% of the Saudi population are expats. The total number of non-Saudis in the country is estimated to be 10,736,293.

Requirements to obtain VISA: To obtain a visa, employees will need to have a sponsor in Saudi Arabia. The sponsoring employer is responsible for most of the application process, but the prospective employee will need to supply all the necessary documents.

Salaries: Teachers in Saudi Arabia will often make anywhere between $2,600 – $4,000 USD per month.

Fun Fact: Saudi Arabia is home to the world’s tallest water fountain named Jeddah.

UAE

Climate: The UAE has a desert climate, with very mild winters and very hot and sunny summers.

Time Zone: Gulf Standard Time (GMT +4)

Expat Population: Out of the 9.2 million total population, the expatriates contributed to around 7.8 million with the Emirati Nationals holding a population share of 1.4 million.

Requirements to obtain VISA: UAE visa requirements for expats are considerably less intensive than in neighbouring Middle Eastern countries. As a popular expat destination, the UAE attempts to make the visa application and process as straightforward as possible.

Salaries: The average teacher salary in U.A.E. international schools is 9,000-15,000 AED per month ($2,400-$4,000).

Fun Fact: Ferrari owns the largest indoor theme park in Abu Dhabi. Their rollercoaster, the Rosso, is the World’s fastest, reaching 150mph in 5 seconds.

Myanmar

Climate: Myanmar has a monsoon climate with three main seasons.

Time Zone: Myanmar Time (GMT +6:30)

Expat Population: Myanmar’s expat population was thought to be 2% of the country’s total population (51,419,420) as of 2014.

Requirements to obtain VISA: To travel to Myanmar, foreign employees will need to obtain a business visa. The requirements for this visa typically include: a completed visa application form, a letter of invitation from the employer in Myanmar, a passport with at least six months of validity, a copy of the information page of the passport, two recent passport photographs and a guarantor from the employer with a copy of the company registration certificate.

Salaries: A person working in Teaching / Education in Myanmar typically earns around 578,000 MMK per month. Salaries range from 277,000 MMK (lowest average) to 1,050,000 MMK (highest average).

Fun Fact: In Myanmar, tea leaves, lahpet, are fermented and eaten in the nation’s most beloved dish, lahpet thohk – tea leaf salad.

Thailand

Climate: The climate of Thailand is tropical, with three distinct seasons.

Time Zone: Indochina Time (GMT +7)

Expat Population: According to the 2010 Census, it was found that there were 2,581,141 expats living in Thailand, composing around 3.87 percent of Thailand’s population.

Requirements to obtain VISA: First of all, you will need to have a Non-Immigrant Visa before being able to apply for a Work Permit.

Salaries: Private International Schools: 80,000-170,000 Bah. The top private international schools pay much higher salaries and they offer attractive benefits as well.

Fun Fact: Thailand is the only country in South-East Asia that has never been colonised under European power.

Hong Kong

Climate: Hong Kong has a subtropical climate with four seasons.

Time Zone: Hong Kong Standard Time (GMT +8)

Expat Population: Hong Kong’s expat percentage of population is one of the highest in the world at 4.2%. The only country in Europe with a higher percentage is Switzerland, where 8% of the population are expats.

Requirements to obtain VISA: The work permit issued to skilled foreign professionals comes under the Employment for Professionals scheme of the country. There is no limit to the number of visas, and these permits are issued to individuals based on the assessment of his qualifications and specific skills set that are not possessed by the Hong Kong local citizens.

Salaries: While salaries tend to be quite high for teachers in Hong Kong, ranging from $3,000-$6,500 per month (23,000-50,000 HKD), you have to keep in mind that the cost of living in this region is incredibly high.

Fun Fact: Although Hong Kong is famous for towering skyscrapers, did you know 40 percent of the territory is made up of country park and nature reserves? Hiking the green trails is a favourite weekend pastime.

Egypt

Climate: Egypt essentially has a hot desert climate.

Time Zone: Eastern European Standard Time (GMT +2)

Expat Population: There are approximately 200,000 expats living and working in Egypt.

Requirements to obtain VISA: If no Egyptian nationals are qualified for a certain position, foreign workers can apply for a work permit that’s valid for up to one year. They can then renew it for up to three years. Before applying for a work permit, each employee must get a security clearance from the National Security Agency in Egypt.

Salaries: The average salary for teaching in Egypt is $2,000 – $2,700 per month.

Fun Fact: Known for its pyramids, Egypt has neither the tallest pyramid in the world nor the most pyramids in the world: the tallest belongs to Mexico and Sudan leads Egypt in the most pyramids per country.

Indonesia

Climate: The climate of Indonesia is almost entirely tropical.

Time Zone: Western Indonesia Time (GMT +7), Central Indonesia Time (GMT +8) and Eastern Indonesia Time (GMT +9)

Expat Population: At the end of 2018, there are 95,335 expats working in Indonesia.

Requirements to obtain VISA: Step 1: Seek government approval and submit an RPTKA to the Ministry of Manpower, Step 2: Apply for an IMTA, Step 3: Apply for a Limited Stay Visa and Permit and Step 4: Apply for a KITAS Card and Blue Foreigner’s Registration Book.

Salaries: A person working in Teaching / Education in Indonesia typically earns around 12,900,000 IDR per month. Salaries range from 6,170,000 IDR (lowest average) to 23,500,000 IDR (highest average).

Fun Fact: According to a 2002 survey by the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space, Indonesia is made up of 18,307 islands.

Malaysia

Climate: Located near the equator, Malaysia’s climate is categorised as equatorial, being hot and humid throughout the year.

Time Zone: Malaysia Time (GMT +8)

Expat Population: As of 2019, the number of expats in Malaysia amounted to approximately 3.43 million. As one of the biggest economies in Southeast Asia, Malaysia is an attractive destination for workers from neighbouring countries seeking better wages and employment.

Requirements to obtain VISA: In order to obtain a work permit, the passport should have a remaining validity of at least 18 months. The foreign national coming to Malaysia to work must be 27 years and above (exception in IT sector, where required minimum age is 23).

Salaries: The average range of pay is 3000 – 4000 MYR per month in an International School.

Fun Fact: The biggest roundabout in the world is located at Putrajaya in Malaysia. It is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) in diameter.

South Africa

Climate: South Africa experiences a high degree of sunshine with rainfall about half of the global average.

Time Zone: South Africa Standard Time (GMT +2)

Expat Population: According to official South African statistics, as of 2011, 2.2 million expats live in South Africa.

Requirements to obtain VISA: The requirements for general work visa applications include; a duly completed application form as per the submitting embassy, consulate or Department of Home Affairs office, SAQA Application, Police Clearance Certificates, Proof of Advertisement, Employer documentation, Medical wellbeing and personal information.

Salaries: A person working in Teaching / Education in South Africa typically earns around 33,000 ZAR per month. Salaries range from 15,800 ZAR (lowest average) to 60,200 ZAR (highest average).

Fun Fact: South Africa’s Table Mountain alone has more flower species than England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland combined.

Ireland

Climate: The climate of Ireland is mild, humid and changeable with abundant rainfall and a lack of temperature extremes.

Requirements to obtain VISA: You must apply for and receive immigration permission to work in Ireland before you apply for a visa. You must have a job offer or employment contract to apply. Permission will only be granted for work that is highly skilled or where there is a skill shortage in Ireland.

Salaries: A person working in Teaching / Education in Ireland typically earns around 40,800 EUR per year. Salaries range from 19,600 EUR (lowest average) to 74,400 EUR (highest average).

Fun Fact: More Irish live outside of Ireland than in. The population of Ireland currently sits at around 4.8 million people, which is still almost 4 million less the population before the Great Irish Famine of 1845-1852. Cayman Islands

Climate: The Cayman Islands have a tropical marine climate.

Requirements to obtain VISA: All non-residents who plan to live and work in the Cayman Islands need a Work Permit. Prior to an employee arriving in the Cayman Islands, the prospective employer must apply to the Cayman Islands Government Department of Workforce Opportunities and Residency Cayman (WORC) for a work permit on the employee’s behalf. WORC reviews all applications from companies and individuals who are seeking permission to work in the Cayman Islands.

Salaries: A person working in Teaching / Education in Cayman Islands typically earns around 41,300 KYD per year. Salaries range from 19,800 KYD (lowest average) to 75,300 KYD (highest average).

Fun Fact: The Cayman Islands aren’t islands at all, they’re part of a mountain called the Cayman Ridge, which rises more than 7,500m – or the size of a very large mountain in the Himalayas – from the ocean floor.

USA

Climate: The overall climate in the United States of America (USA) is temperate, although with some exceptions.

Expat Population: The largest foreign-born population in the world is in the United States, which was home to 39 million foreign-born residents in 2012, or 12.6% of the population.

Requirements to obtain VISA: There are two ways through which you can go to the US for employment purposes; as a temporary employee and as a sponsored/permanent employee. The temporary employees need a US non-immigrant visa, while the sponsored employees need an Immigrant Visa. This article will cover all you need to know about being a temporary employee and getting a US work visa.

Salaries: The average salary for an expat teacher in the US is $60,477.

Fun Fact: Since the founding of the United States, there have been 27 versions of the American flag. Each new flag represented the addition of new states.

Brazil

Climate: In general, Brazil is a year-round destination with temperatures rarely dipping below 20°C (68°F).

Time Zone: Acre Standard Time (GMT -5), Amazon Standard Time (GMT -4), Brasilia Standard Time (GMT -3), Fernando de Noronha Standard Time (GMT -2)

Expat Population: There are an estimated 1.5 million foreigners currently living in Brazil, while the 2000 census quotes a total number of 683,830 (legal) immigrants. Foreigners are deemed to be persons who were born abroad, regardless of their citizenship.

Requirements to obtain VISA: You must have two years of relevant professional experience in the field in which you’re applying and at least nine years of education or: A relevant university degree and one year of professional experience. No professional experience with a relevant post-graduate degree.

Salaries: A person working in Teaching / Education in Brazil typically earns around 9,080 BRL per month. Salaries range from 4,350 BRL (lowest average) to 16,600 BRL (highest average).

Fun Fact: The world’s best beach – according to TripAdvisor – is Baia do Sancho, in Brazil. It is found in the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, just over an hour by air from Natal.

Nigeria

Climate: Nigeria has a tropical climate with variable rainy and dry seasons, depending on location.

Requirements to obtain VISA: Except for tourists, most expatriates that immigrate to Nigeria do so mainly for work purposes. The process of obtaining visa, work or residence permits, therefore, usually commences with their employers. The first thing any company desirous of employing expatriates employees will do is to apply for the grant of an Expatriate Quota.
